The two-story house at 99 Fulton Avenue, where Kendall Francois lived with his parents and teenage sister, was the kind of place with which children like to scare themselves, calling it a haunted house. Unlike most of the homes in the middle-class neighborhood, a few blocks from the Vassar College campus, it looked as though it was about to fall down. Paint was peeling off the faded green clapboard siding, the yard was overgrown with weeds, and trash littered the ground. It looked like something out of a horror movie. It smelled even worse.

Now twenty-seven, the six-foot four-inch, three-hundred-pound Francois had worked until January 1997 as a hall monitor at Arlington Middle School. A dark-skinned Haitian native, he must have looked like a giant to the children he watched over, but they didn’t seem to fear him. Their nickname for him was “Stinky.” Neither the children nor their teachers had any idea that Francois had started picking up female sex workers in downtown Poughkeepsie in 1996. From time to time, over a period of more than twenty-two months, he would take the prostitutes home for sex, then kill them.

His ninth encounter turned violent when he began strangling his intended victim in his second-story bedroom. Using a combination of pleading and wily manipulation, she broke free and persuaded Francois to drive her back to Main Street, where he had picked her up. As they pulled into a nearby Sunoco gas station, the woman jumped out of the car and ran off.

Coincidentally, two detectives were nearby, preparing to hand out flyers asking for help in finding Catina Newmaster. They saw Francois driving by and waved to him. Francois waved back, recognizing one of the detectives from his interview. The detectives pulled into the same gas station from which the woman had just run away, and a man there told the police that a woman had just said she had been assaulted. The two detectives found the woman walking down a nearby street. She confirmed the attack and accompanied the men to the police station to file a complaint against Francois. Police arrested him and searched his home, where they discovered eight bodies in various states of decomposition.
